Background
Casinos present some of the toughest indoor air quality challenges. With 24/7 operations, high guest turnover, dense occupancy, and constant interaction with gaming equipment, surfaces and shared air quickly become hotspots for microbial contamination. Traditional disinfection methods such as chemical sprays, ionizers, and passive filters often fall short, creating ongoing labor costs, inconsistent results, or unwanted side effects like ozone or mold introduction.
The Study
This independent study, conducted by Scientific Air Solutions, evaluated nonthermal plasma technology (formerly AIRPHX, now Maple Air) in a 400,000 sq. ft. regional casino.
The installation included:
• 14 devices deployed across administrative areas, the poker room, VIP gaming, loading dock, and event spaces
• Indirect coverage across the main gaming floor and restaurants
• Two years of continuous testing with air and surface samples at full occupancy
Key Findings
1. Airborne Contamination Reduced by up to 97%
• Pretreatment air samples averaged 478 CFU/m³ (unacceptable by air quality standards).
• After installation, levels dropped to an average of 15–23 CFU/m³, a 95–97% reduction, consistently meeting “clean and acceptable” thresholds even during peak occupancy.
2. Surface Contamination Reduced by 90–91%
• High-touch areas like gaming tables and administrative spaces showed reductions from 18 CFU/cm² down to 1.8 CFU/cm².
• These results remained consistent across the two-year testing period.
3. Effective in Direct and Indirect Spaces
• Even untreated areas such as the main gaming floor experienced reductions similar to directly treated zones, proving the system’s ability to circulate effectively through existing HVAC infrastructure.
4. Validated vs. Other Solutions
• The casino previously used ionizers, which showed no measurable impact.
• Maple Air’s nonthermal plasma delivered consistent, measurable reductions without chemicals, heavy labor, or filter changes.
Why It Works
Maple Air’s nonthermal plasma technology generates a safe blend of oxidizing molecules, including gas-phase hydrogen peroxide, that neutralize bacteria, mold spores, VOCs, and viruses both in the air and on surfaces.
• Safe: Byproducts maintained at 1/100th of OSHA safety limits.
• Scalable: Treats millions of cubic feet without loss of efficacy.
• Low-Maintenance: Runs quietly and continuously, lowering operating costs compared to chemical or filter-based systems.
The Bottom Line
This two-year, peer-reviewed study confirms that Maple Air’s nonthermal plasma technology significantly improves air and surface quality in one of the most challenging environments: a large, fully operational casino. With reductions of up to 97% in airborne microbes and 91% on surfaces, Maple Air offers a proven, real-world solution for:
• Casinos and hospitality
• Schools and universities
• Healthcare facilities
• Commercial properties
• Residential spaces
Cleaner air. Healthier environments. Independent results you can trust.
